Some fucking people who think that the smallest things are offensive.
People who blame an entire nationality/country for things that happened years ago.
I mean, it’s all well and good to think your country is great. I’m proud to be English, I think England’s fab. It has some great history, and it has some bad history. The English were dicks, yes, they were. I’m sure some people aren’t fond of what the British Empire did, and what English people did when they colonised countries across the globe. But you shouldn’t hate the English.
I don’t hate Germans for the Blitz.
I don’t hate the French for the Norman invasion a thousand years ago.
I don’t hate the Norwegians/Danish for the Viking invasion and the slaughter of innocent people.
Why? Because it happened a long long long time ago. It doesn’t affect me, it hasn’t altered my quality of life. What happened to my country, the people who lived in my country, my distance ancestors, does not affect my life today.
Let me give you an example:
I am of Scottish heritage, quite close actually as I’m 4th generation English. I have traced back my family tree to relatives who lived there, I visited Scotland to learn about where they lived, ect ect.
I also learned about the clan I come from. And I learnt that during a battle against the English, around 500 clans men (which is my distant relatives. Very distant, but still) died at the hands of English soldiers.
Do I hate the English? No. I don’t. For one, I am English. My parents were born here, my grandparents were. And for another, war is war. Battles are battles. They aren’t good, they aren’t nice, and the sad truth is people die. There are winners and losers, people will do wrong to other people. It’s sad but that’s how it is.
The actions of a country years ago does not affect me. It gives me no reason to hate them, I don’t hate the Germans, French, Danish, ect.
Yes, some people are narrow minded and hold hatred towards them. Some people are easily influenced by nationalism to hate the so called “enemies” of their country.
I see no reason for that. At all. Yes, if it is very recent history, and people that you know and love or are close enough related to were hurt badly and done horrible wrong to, then you have reason to feel better and sad.
But the actions of a country does not make every citizen of that country bad or responsible.
And blaming a country for what happened hundreds of years ago is not good. In the example of the UK, yes England was dicks to the Scottish and the Welsh and the Irish. Yes, it hasn’t all been plain sailing and niceties. But it’s a fucking United Kingdom for a reason. We aren’t at war. We don’t genuinely hate each other with a burning passion. We’re allied, like it or not. Whether it lasts another 300 years, well we’ll see. But the UK isn’t over yet, my friends.
And getting fucking offended over something so meagre as a flag, well. You have some issues you need to sort.
tl;dr: The actions of a country does make every citizen of that country bad or responsible. DON’T GET OFFENDED BY THINGS THAT HAPPENED HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO.
OKAY HERE I FOUND IT HERE’S THAT POST RELEVANT TO THE LATEST FIASCO
Just. Bless.
